2022-23 season first update for Blizzard Families

Hi Blizzard families and friends,

Registration is open now for September camps and tryouts. This pre-season schedule takes us to mid-October All ice times are at Membertou. DEADLINE to sign up is August 28, groups will be sorted at that point. All the info is on our website under News and REGISTER.  If you have any questions email or Facebook message us and we can help. www.capebretonblizzard.ca

All new-to-hockey players joining us this year can get FREE gear. All ages. Same for older players who left the sport but want to come back.  Spread the word among your friends and family. There has never been a better time to get into the game.

News highlights from the summer:

MacDonald Auto Group has sponsored us with a new 2022 Kia Forte to raffle off to raise funds for our rink project. The car has been out and about this summer.  We will get that all up and running once our teams are formed. In the meantime, enter a draw to win a free $500 gas card.  Share this link on your socials with friends and family:

Next summer will have a lot of activity leading into the Kraft Hockeyville pre-season NHL game and community celebration for the fall of 2023. Summer students will run some week-long camps and drop-in skates and mini-camps all summer long. The dates will be announced for these soon so you can plan around it. Thanks to Maddy, Jordan, Leila and Marley and Sam and Meghan and Jeneva for all of their help through the summer.

We won't have ice at CBU this fall, as construction work is in the planning stages, but we have requested and been informed that we will be gaining more ice time from CBRM at least on a temporary basis to hold us over.

50/50 draws: Ticket draws are expected to begin on September 25. Players who sell tickets averaged $500 toward their player account! In addition to selling the tickets we need workers! Workers earn $40 towards their player accounts by staffing the draws on Sundays. Working just half of the Sunday afternoon draws would cover registration costs. Anyone 18+ can work on behalf of a player, i.e. a grandparent, cousin, friend etc. Get on the list for that by sending a note here: info@capebretonblizzard.ca

Team groupings outlook:

At the conclusion of last season our projections for this season were: 45 players at U18, 54 players at U15, 58 players at U13. Hard to estimate U7, U9 and U11 as many players join at that age but expect those numbers are similar.

This projects the following teams: U18 AA and U18 A, U15AAA and U15A, U13AAA and U13A, U11AA, U9ADV, FIRST SHIFT in Sydney and Eskasoni and house league local play that includes all ages. Tryouts for U18 AA and U13AAA and U15AAA begin on September 19.  The U11AA tryout begins on Oct. 1.  Players must be signed up for tryouts. See the REGISTRATION page on our website and the dates and time list at the bottom of this message.

Regular season registration will open soon on the website. We are holding the registration fees in line with last season and working with the Hockey Nova Scotia Female Hockey League to make a travel team schedule that is as efficient as possible to cut down on expenses.

Thank you to everyone who signed up for coaching. We have over 100 people on our list of coaches and officials. YOU people are amazing!  We will have days in September to process Records Checks and go over credentials required.  Some of those who will joining us for player development include Justin Hache, Greg O'Neill, Ian Harries, Donald Kennedy and goalie coach Ken Bickerton along with CBU Capers and Lynx AAA players. We just learned that our goalie Coach Kristy will be moving away soon so we won't see her for much longer. Thanks Kristy and good luck!

Our board still needs a 50/50 Fundraiser coordinator.  We are also looking for assistance with some jobs in Sept-Nov in accounting, marketing and retail if you have experience in these areas and free time especially in the first few months of the season, please reach out.
